In this year's trip, the group will be visiting St. Mary's Parish Church in Putney, London, and St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, Edinburgh. Mini Day CampsJuly, 2009The Children & Family Work Area has planned some mini day camps during July for the children of our church and community. | Register Online | Let's ReadThe best part of reading a book is talking about it with others who have also read it. The following book discussions are planned: The View From Saturdayby E.L. KoingsburgHow did Mrs. Olinski, returning to teaching ten years after being paralyzed in an automobile accident, choose four very different children to be her sixth- grade Academic Bowl team? And how did this unlikely foursome become even unlikelier champions, in far more than just the state middle school competition? The View From Saturday is a rich and rewarding journey that answers these questions and raises many more.

One that can outrun dogs, hit a home run off the best pitcher in the neighborhood, tie a knot no one can undo. It's also the story of how this boy, Jeffrey Lionel "Maniac" Magee, confronts racism in a small town, tries to find a home where there is none and attempts to soothe tensions between rival factions on the tough side of town.

This year, DGFUMC is organizing three mission trips to Rogers Park for Junior High youth, Senior High youth, and adults. Junior High Mission TripJuly 19 to 22, 2009The United Church of Rogers Park is a United Methodist Church at Ashland and Morse in Chicago. The name of the church came years ago when it was a united church having both United Church of Christ and United Methodist pastors. Rogers Park is a diverse community with great need. UCRP serves not only as a church but as a community center for the neighborhood. This year, the Junior High Mission Trip is to serve the community of UCRP. The trip is open to incoming 7th graders through those going into 9th grade. On Sunday, July 19 we'll ride Metra and the "L", to Rogers Park. We will prepare and serve the Community Feast, the Sunday night meal for the neighborhood. On Monday and Tuesday we will work with Kids Club. We will sleep at Evanston FUMC on Sunday and Monday. Adult Mission TripJuly 20-22, 2009Pick up your paintbrush or hammer or saw, come make a sandwich or help lead a song… Be part of a very flexible mission trip to help with the maintenance and ministry of this 100 year old church in Chicago. Drive or car pool to Rogers Park for the day, or an afternoon, or for all three days - whatever is convenient. The trip is designed for workers of all ability levels, eg, from tuck-pointing, painting, plastering and handyman jobs, to stocking the thrift store shelves. This church will allow us to learn about the ministry of an urban church that provides community for and serves the most diverse population per square mile in the United States. For more information about this mission opportunity, contact Jim Gracey through the church office. Youth Mission TripJuly 25-31, 2009The First United Methodist Church of Downers Grove has a long tradition of Youth Mission Trips. This year, we will start a new tradition in cooperation with our sister church the United Church of Rogers Park. We will be doing the same kinds of tasks we've always done. Roofs, painting, cleaning, yard work. Plus the possibility of working in a soup kitchen and food warehouse. Remember that mission work is mission work. Food in the belly or the pantry is as important as a roof over head. We will be working near home but in a very different place than Downers Grove. Wesley Heritage TourLondon, Oxford, and Bristol, UKOctober 1-12, 2009Join us on a tour of the UK that explores the roots of the United Methodist Church, visiting sites that were significant in John Wesley's life. The tour will be led by two of our pastors, Rev. Nick Nicholas and Rev. Jonathan Dean. The registration deadline is January 30. | More Details | Vacation Bible SchoolAugust 4-6, 2009
